Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos are the prosthetic Cubans, but the music is the real thing! It's a tribute to the Cuban maestro Arsenio Rodriguez. Highly recommended to all fans of latin jazz-fusion. National Public Radio 'Silent Movies is a gorgeous and insular detour for downtown guitar visionary Marc Ribot, a dude best known for frenetic Tzadik -endorsed aggro-jazz, wild excursions with Cuban music, atonal balloon-rubbing antics, and percussive ejaculations on any number of Tom Waits albums. Marc Ribot is known to be one of his kin's most unusual protagonists since his brash trashy trademark sound and stubborn intonation enriched Tom Waits' classic Rain Dogs album (1985). With Your Turn, second effort from his power trio Ceramic Dog, the multifunctional guitarist from New York has succeeded to produce a gorgeously dirty sounding album. Five years after their critically acclaimed debut release, Ceramic Dog, the power trio featuring Marc Ribot (guitar), Shahzad Ismaily (bass/electronics) and Ches Smith (drums), is back with the hard-hitting tour de force Your Turn. Time Out New York called Ceramic Dog Ribot's 'rawest band in ages'. May 01, 2000 Ribot's guitar is something else again. Though it never seems to dominate the catchy rhythms, occasional vocals or aggressively funky beats, Ribot is clearly out front sporting some of the loveliest playing he's ever done. He's content to strum his three-chord parts during the melody.

One of the better Beatles cover compilations out there, this outing takes an experimental look at the Fab Four as covered by 12 acts that have graced the Knitting Factory stage in New York. There's some straight-ahead takes, such as Defunkt's version of 'Come Together,' a lovely take on 'Dear Prudence' by Samm Bennett and Chunk, and the Arto Lindsay/Mark Ribot/Syd Straw/Joey Baron/Greg Cohen jam on 'Don't Let Me Down.' And one would have a hard time finding a small brass band arrangement of 'Revolution #9' (by Kurt Hoffman's Band of Weeds), Eugene Chadbourne improvising on 'A Day in the Life' and skittering off into 'For No One' and 'On the Road Again,' or Buddha Pest's thrashcore 'Blue Jay Way' anywhere else. Unlike a lot of Beatles tribute albums, the artists don't stand in thrall to the Beatles' legacy, but play around with the shared cultural knowledge of their audience. A fun album.
